North Richland Hills: finding
a leak too small to see.

This North Richland Hills system had been shut off completely because of a leak nobody could find. Landon noticed one patch of grass by a valve that was greener than the rest, turned the water back on and left it running for a day. The valve box filled with water, which put the leak at the fittings there. He replaced the broken fittings. The total was $150.

Landon's job notes

Problemsuper small undetectable leak so water had been turned off to the entire system.

Solutionfound an abnormally green area near a valve. Let the water run for a day, valve box filled with water and leak detected. Replaced broken fittings and fixed leak.

As Landon wrote them after the job, spelling tidied.

How the leak was found

Small leaks are hard because they don't puddle. The water soaks into the clay and the only sign is grass that does a little better than the grass around it. Here that was an abnormally green patch near a valve.

A green patch is a clue, not proof, so the next step was to let the system pressurize and wait. After a day with the water on, the valve box was full of water, which put the leak at that valve.

What was done

The broken fittings were dug out and replaced and the leak was fixed. The photo shows the new fittings with the round valve box in the dig beside them.

How do you find a sprinkler leak you can't see?

Look for grass that is greener than the surrounding lawn, especially near valves, then let the system stay pressurized and watch where water collects. On this job, a day with the water on left the valve box full, which pinpointed the broken fittings.
