Why a sprinkler break can take the house water with it
Part of a sprinkler system is under pressure all the time: the line from the house supply up to the zone valves. A break on that side does not stop when the controller turns off. If there is no separate irrigation shutoff, or the one that exists will not close, the only way to stop the water is the main shutoff, and then the kitchen and bathrooms are dry too.
That turns a sprinkler repair into an urgent one.

What was done
Landon dug out the break, repaired the pipe and replaced the valve. The photo shows the repair before backfill, with purple primer on the new fittings. Water was restored the same day the pipe broke.
Do I have to shut off water to my whole house if a sprinkler pipe breaks?
Only if the break is on the pressurized side of the system and there is no working irrigation shutoff between the house supply and the valves. If you have to use the main shutoff, the house is without water until the pipe is repaired. On this Keller job, water was back on the same day.
